LYNN, Lydia T. Age 87, of Big Flats, NY passed away at home with her loving family by her side on Thursday, February 3, 2022. Lydia was born in Yonkers, NY on November 23, 1934, daughter of the late Roland and Ruth (Johnson) Tiemann and brought up in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Karl and Jerome Tiemann. Lydia attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA accepting her B.S in BioChemistry in 1956 and later obtaining her M.S. degree at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ in Biochemistry. Lydia worked for the National Institutes of Health, and later for the University of Florida in Gainesville as a Biochemist where she earned the nickname of the Plasma Protein Princess for her work on discovering and furthering the scientific understanding of plasma proteins, a fundamental component of blood. While at Rudgers, she also volunteered with inner city youth as part of a social outreach program. In 1970, Lydia moved to Big Flats, NY where she would go on to win a citizen of the year award in 2019 for her diverse works that included being a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader, the president of the SPCA and the Blind association, reading at library story hour and substitute teaching, running the gift shop at the Mark Twain Musical Drama and Tanglewood Nature Center, and leading an exercise class for Seniors for 23 years. Along the way she took the time to teach and encourage anyone who was willing to learn and imagine, including 15 exchange students and more, less formal visitors and friends who lived and learned with the Lynns. Lydia lived by the motto of her exercise class “Helping ourselves by helping others.” Lydia is survived by her husband of 64 and a half years, Merrill; daughter, Katherine (Michael Broggy) Lynn of Morton, PA; son, Alexander Lynn of Dallas, TX; granddaughter, Juliette Hannah Lynn; A celebration of Lydia’s life will take place on Saturday, June 25 at the Big Flats Community Center. In lue of flowers, the family is requesting that you make a donation to the Tanglewood Nature Center. Arrangements are with the Jame D. Barrett Funeral Home.
