Mary W. Richer
Age 98, most recently of Waldorf Maryland, originally of Elmira, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at the Charleston Senior Living Facility. She was born on July 6, 1924 in Horseheads, NY to the late, Otto and Ruth Hynes. She is also predeceased by her husband, Harold H. Richer; her son, Charles Edward Richer and her daughter Carol Barone; as well as her brother Edward Hynes and sister, Alice States, and feline daughter, Mercedes. Mary is survived by her children Hal Richer (and wife Beth) and MaryAnn Engelbert; grandchildren, Todd Barone, Kristy Nickerson (and husband Kevin), Kevin Richer, and Lindsay Richer; great grandson Dylan Barone; along with several nieces and nephews. Mary was a graduate of Horseheads High School and was one of the many young women who joined the workforce at the request of President Franklin Roosevelt during WW II, to help replace the male workers who were on the front lines. She went on to be one of the women to continue to work outside the home after marriage and was employed by a number of companies including Remington Rand and Ann Paige. While in her 60’s she engaged in a new career of providing home care to the elderly and disabled. In her 80’s, she was inducted into the international Beta Sigma Phi sorority as an honorary member of Xi Beta Alpha Chapter in Waldorf MD. She was much loved by her family and by the many others who had the privilege to know her. Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, March 4th from 10 am to 12 pm at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow there at 12 pm, followed by interment in Maple Grove Cemetery.
